   They call it X

   Speculation without limits spoils the creative process… it makes the artist a slave of his own production. He sees himself forced to keep a persistent style in time. We cannot be thinking of economic profits while creating a piece of art… we would lose our expressive power.
The overrating of a piece is the main interest to the speculator. For this reason he makes it the object of worship and gives extra sensitive dimensions to it. No one can deny them without looking ridiculous amongst an artificial elite.

   That's why I claim the art of 5 senses, the art that expresses, the art that communicates, the art that gets to everyone and everywhere… We must trivialize the graphic work to its limits, to the point where error becomes inconsequential and there is not point on disguising it for being childish.

   Why is it that the relationship between a musician and his song is so different from that one of the painter and his picture? Because music is exported to everyone, it benefits from line production and it's affordable to every person. The same thing happens to literature, cinema, theater…

   No one underrates a good CD recording or a high quality book edition. Even more, many people will claim that a symphony recorded inside a studio, with modern means and listened with good headphones will produce a better quality sound than a symphony played inside a building with an audience or life in the open air; and a novel edited with easy print will transmit the suspense better than the manuscript itself with the handwritten corrections and crossing outs by the author. Direct manifestations may produce other kinds of feelings, sometimes it may be simply snobbism, but they will be, for sure, reactions that are far away from the author's intentions.

   Then... what can we, plastic artists, do? Should we wait to the day one of our pieces is auctioned at Sotheby's? We cannot wait. We must turn our work into a product that can reach everyone. We won't give up the big profits, but we won't prevent the general public from enjoying our work in its entire dimension. We must not allow speculators to invent any more dimensions. We will strip our artwork of that possibility by releasing it from its physical support and by creating with digital means. We will be like musicians and writers. People will buy their mp3, their books and our paintings on either paper or fabric.
   I do not want that everybody worship me… all I want is people to see what I do.

   Lo llaman X

   La especulación sin límites daña el proceso creativo... Hace al artista esclavo de su producción. Se ve obligado a tener un estilo persistente en el tiempo. No podemos estar pensando en los beneficios económicos cuando creamos una obra de arte, así perdemos la fuerza expresiva.

   La sobrevaloración de una obra interesa sobre todo al especulador. Para ello la convierte en un objeto de culto y la dota de dimensiones extra-sensitivas. Nadie puede negarlas sin caer en el ridículo ante una élite artificial.

   Por eso reivindico el arte de los 5 sentidos, el arte que expresa, el arte que comunica, el arte que llega a todos y en todas partes… Debemos trivializar la obra gráfica hasta el límite. Hasta que el error sea intrascendente y no merezca disfrazarse por pueril.

   ¿ Por qué la relación de un músico con su canción es tan diferente de la del pintor con su cuadro? Porque la música se exporta a todos, se beneficia de la producción en cadena y se hace asequible para todas las personas. Y esto mismo pasa con la literatura, el cine, el teatro...

   Y nadie infravalora una buena grabación en CD o una edición de calidad de un libro. Incluso muchos asegurarán que una sinfonía grabada en un estudio con medios modernos y oída usando buenos cascos produce un sonido de más calidad que una ejecutada en un local con público o al aire libre en directo; y también transmitirá mejor el suspense una novela editada con cómodos caracteres de imprenta que el propio manuscrito con correcciones y tachaduras del autor. Puede que las manifestaciones directas produzcan sentimientos de otro tipo, algunas veces se tratará de simple esnobismo, pero seguro que son reacciones que se alejan mucho de lo que pretende el autor.

   Entonces, ¿qué podemos hacer los artistas plásticos? ¿Esperar a que un día una obra nuestra se subaste en Sotheby's? No debemos esperar. Tenemos que convertir nuestra obra en un producto que pueda llegar a todo el mundo. No renunciaremos a grandes beneficios pero tampoco impediremos al gran público disfrutar de nuestra obra en toda su dimensión. No debemos dejar que los especuladores inventen más dimensiones de las que hay. Despojaremos nuestro arte de esa posibilidad desvinculándola de su soporte físico y creando con medios informáticos. Seremos como los músicos y los escritores. La gente comprará sus mp3, sus libros y nuestras impresiones en papel o tela.

   No quiero que todos me adoren, sólo quiero que vean lo que hago.
